The Stop Community Food Centre (The Stop) works to increase people’s access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, builds community and challenges inequality. In the fall of 2008, The Stop will open the Green Barn, a sustainable food production and education centre that will actively engage people to grow, eat, learn about, advocate for and celebrate healthy, local food.

We are seeking a Horticulture Coordinator to operate the new 3,000 square foot year-round organic (non-certified) greenhouse, sheltered garden and compost demonstration site. This person will also provide seedlings and garden planning support to the 8,000 square foot Earlscourt Park Community Garden. The ideal candidate will have the capacity to share their knowledge about growing with community members in workshops and volunteer sessions. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about growing healthy, sustainable food in the city and can contribute to a cooperative, skilled and dedicated team.

Responsibilities:
● Coordinate vegetable and seedling production for The Stop’s programs in a year-round, organic greenhouse
● Maintain greenhouse systems (climate control, irrigation)
● Supervise staff, students and volunteers in the greenhouse
● Coordinate sheltered garden and compost demonstration site in conjunction with the Urban Agriculture Coordinator
● Collaborate on the design and delivery of education programs

Qualifications:
● Excellent knowledge of organic/ecological growing methods in greenhouse and garden settings
● Knowledge of state of the art greenhouse systems
● Knowledge of and commitment to composting
● Ability to train, supervise and support volunteers, students and part-time, seasonal staff
● Ability to work with a diverse community (people of different ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds; marginalized people)
● Commitment to social justice and knowledge of food systems issues
● Comfort with teaching adults and children in small groups
● Ability to work independently and as part of a team
● Ability to speak a second language relevant to the neighbourhood

Salary: $38,500 plus benefits
