Eat to Win, Eat to Feel Good

Sunday Harrison, one of FoodCycle’s board members had her organization (Green Thumbs, Growing Kids) profiled in the Toronto Star recently. The author and Sunday highlight the fact that the food does more than just build strong bodies. Food is the vehicle to educate our next generations and grow healthy, vibrant minds.

Sunday and other educators highlight the fact that there is no system for school food in the city of Toronto or even nationally for that matter. And it’s true, from my own research and the continued advocacy efforts of FoodShare.

Does that mean our leaders don’t think it’s worth our while to be raising healthier, smarter kids? Especially in today’s highly competitive global economy? Sounds like a strategically unsound move to me.

‘Food is not just about fuelling the body’

At Winchester Public School, students have developed a taste for kale and parsley.

Anywhere else in the city, these two leafy greens would be universally reviled by the elementary-school set, but these kids have helped sprout the seeds, tend the plants and harvest the vegetables

“Kids will gobble them up,” says Sunday Harrison, executive director of Green Thumbs Growing Kids, a non-profit organization that works with FoodShare to run the garden program at Winchester. “They will roll them up in sushi rolls. Parsley gets really sweet after a frost, kale as well.”
