The Details

FoodCycles first city farm field planting days will be Sat-Mon, Jun 20-22 at our field space at Keele and Sheppard (Downsview Park, http://bit.ly/ATb3G and http://bit.ly/YDDfp). It’ll be a potluck lunch each day with music, readying the soil and of course summer planting and seeding. Delicate flowers, sprawling squash, spicy peppers and wonderful smelling herb seedlings from the greenhouse will finally find a home on the field after soaking up some intense heat inside.

Bring a good pair of boots or shoes, work gloves, water, a hat and the passionate desire to do some work under the midday sun. Bring spoons, forks and plates as well as musical gear if that helps. And of course don’t forget to bake a dish of lovely food if possible. Kindly pass word of the event to interested friends and relatives.

There seems to be a lot of people interested in coming Sunday. Saturday is FoodShare’s AGM (see the Google Calendar in the right side bar for details).

It is highly recommended that you get a pair of steel toed work boots or at the least rubber boots just in case.

In reality we’ve got a whole lot of volunteers coming Monday and Tuesday. The actual planting and compost spreading won’t happen until Monday. From the looks of things we won’t be setting up the greenhouse raised beds until that day either. If you can make it out then that’d be fantastic.

Friends,

If anyone has spare wheel barrows, shovels or rakes you’re encouraged to bring them!

The event has been extended to include Tuesday (because there’s lots to do) and we’ve got a schedule that looks something like this at the moment:

Saturday (chance of rain, bring rain gear)
Start hardening the plants
Weeding
Rock picking
Oat and barley sifting
Stake out the locations for the raised bed inside the greenhouse
Watering

Sunday (sunny)
Start hardening the plants
Weeding (and collect weed seed heads)
Rock picking
Oat and barley sifting
Stake out the locations for the raised bed inside the greenhouse
Watering
Pick up wood for raised beds.
Raised bed building (for hot house tomatoes, peppers and basil)
Planting flowers at the edges.
Cover cropping seeding (maybe)

Monday (sunny?)
Build 3 bin composter.
Cover crop seeding.
Spread compost by hand and wheel barrow.
Planting the transplants
Direct seeding

Tuesday (sunny?)
Build 3 bin composter?
Cover crop seeding.
Spread compost by hand and wheel barrow.
Measure and mark off beds.
Planting the transplants
Direct seeding

As always thanks for the spirited support!
Sunny

Just finished reading the dough for the honey bread with cooked grains and corn dill sandwich bread. The recipes will be posted as soon as I have pictures for the cooked loaves. Bring sandwich stuff and I’ll bring the honey!
