Most people might have slept “in” a garden yet how many do you know have slept “over” one? Jane Hutton (FoodCycles latest member) and her partner Adrian designed an award winning sleep-above-the-garden net as part of the 10th Edition of the International Garden Festival at Les Jardins de Métis in Grand-Métis, Quebec. The festival runs from June 27th to October 4th, 2009 and Jane says “the Gaspe is an absolutely amazing place to visit too.”
Dymaxion Sleep is a whole set of nets rigged above a field of wonderful smelling plants. Instead of walking through the garden, people sleep on top of it. The typically one person experience of sleeping in a garden is turned into a public event. Mints, lemon geranium, eucalyptus and lavender are put at specific locations under the net and mark out the best places to take a nap.
The steel that holds the nets is an unfolded icosahedron, the form of Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion World Map. If Fuller’s map blew the way we see the world by refusing to be something you could lay flat, Dymaxion Sleep sets up places on which to relax in different ways: curled up, stretched out, or piled upon friends.
