Volunteer Frank Ivis sent along this video of how Wegman’s organic research farm in western New York State is trying to boost the amount of local, organic food all year round. Not only that they also know that the soil is key – the soil takes care of the plant.
I mentioned Wegmans to you some time ago. I read about Wegmans recently in a book called Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture. Wegmans is discussed as one of the more progressive retailers in the US. Anyway, on their website, they have some videos about their Organic Research Farm (http://videos.wegmans.com/?). In the one titled ‘Benefits of Making Healthy Soil‘, you can see the farm getting the food waste directly from one of their supermarkets, and then using that waste for compost which in turn is used to grow vegetables for the supermarket – quite a tight ‘food cycle’
