| From Breaking Ground: 2nd Farm Work Gig Revs Up |
Mike is putting the compost down before the plants go in the ground — that’s how you start your garden! Let the good bacteria help you put good nutrients into the earth.
Our wonderful, local neighbour Nick Dumitru recently created a simple yet effective online compost calculator to help you find out how much compost you need for your garden or farm field this spring.
All you have to do is enter the length and width of your garden field. Then you figure out how deep the new layer of live giving compost should be.
For the first time, it should be at least 1 inch deep. In other years you could do with a third of it. You can do a full inch every 5 years.
So try out the Compost Calculator right here.
Many thanks to Nick Dumitru for generously and thoughtfully building this little compost calculator for everyone!
PS. FoodCycles hasn’t got enough compost and worm compost for you just yet though we can direct you to a few great people who do.
To make life easier here are some of our favourites:
The Greener Side with Chris MacLuckie: dew worm compost anybody?
Sosnickis Organic Produce: the Sosnickis usually sell great compost in 25 lb bags at Dufferin Grove Farmers Market
Birdseye Farm with John Leanders: they do really large loads — John is for heavy duty gardeners mostly, ask for more information (519.833.9928). FoodCycles bought compost from him last year in bulk for the market garden — like 10 tonnes of it.

So who are these people with all the great compost then?
